The large mouth bass is one of the hardest fighing fish that swims in Midwest waters. This amazing fish often produces jolting strikes and wild airborne leaps, and is one of the most exciting fish to catch.

Largemouth bass look very similar to their close cousin, the smallmouth. Often they are found in the same waters. To tell the two apart, look at the closed mouth. If it extends back beyond the back of the eye, the fish is a largemouth. If it goes only to the middle of the eye, it’s a smallmouth.

The spawning of largemouth bass in the midwest occurs from late April to early July. The selection of nest sites begin when water temperatures reach 60º F, and eggs are laid when the water temperatures are at 62-65º F. The male largemouth bass usually selects a sand or gravel bottom upon which to build a nest; however, the fish will also nest on soft bottoms, where they are able to expose such hard objects as roots, twigs, and snail shells on which to deposit the eggs. Territorial defense against intruders is practiced by the largemouth bass as it is by other sunfishes.

As Fry, Largemouth bass eat copepods and waterfleas but soon add seedclams and small insect larvae. Before the end of their first growing season, they add small fishes to their diet. Largemouth consume many species of fishes (including sunfishes, yellow perch, and minnows), crayfish, surface insects, and frogs.

Largemouth grow quickly, reaching 2-3 lbs in 3 to 4 years. A largemouth bass can live up to 15 years, but fish over 10 years old are rare.
